How to Calculate CGPA – Formula & Guide
Pakistan (HEC 4.0 Scale)
Pakistani universities follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) standardized 4.0 GPA scale. The formula is:
CGPA = Weighted average GPA across all semesters
Percentage = CGPA × 25 (HEC standard simple formula)
Universities using HEC 4.0: NUST, COMSATS, FAST-NUCES, LUMS, IBA Karachi, UET Lahore/Peshawar, Punjab University, Quaid-i-Azam University, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Virtual University, UMT, Riphah, SZABIST, Bahria University, and 270+ HEC-recognized institutions.
India (UGC CBCS 10.0 Scale)
Indian universities follow the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) 10.0 grading scale introduced in 2015. Most central and state universities use:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Credits
Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 (UGC/CBSE recommended)
Note: VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Anna University uses CGPA × 10. Mumbai University uses 7.1 × CGPA + 11 (Arts/Commerce) or 7.25 × CGPA + 11 (Engineering). Delhi University uses CGPA × 9.5. Always verify with your official marksheet.
