How AP World History Scoring Works
The AP World History: Modern exam does not use a simple percentage grade. Instead, it uses a weighted composite system across four sections. Your raw scores are converted to weighted points, added together, and then mapped to a final score of 1–5.
The Composite Score Formula
Each section's raw score is scaled using this formula:
| Section | Raw Score | Max Points | Weight | Formula |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MCQ | 0–55 | 60 | 40% | (correct ÷ 55) × 60 |
| SAQ | 0–9 | 30 | 20% | (points ÷ 9) × 30 |
| DBQ | 0–7 | 37.5 | 25% | (points ÷ 7) × 37.5 |
| LEQ | 0–6 | 22.5 | 15% | (points ÷ 6) × 22.5 |
| Total | — | 150 | 100% | Sum of all four sections |
MCQ = 45.8 + SAQ = 23.3 + DBQ = 26.8 + LEQ = 15.0 = 110.9 composite → Estimated Score: 4

How to Improve Your APWH Score by Section
📘 MCQ Tips (40% of your score)
Every MCQ is stimulus-based — start by reading the attribution (who wrote it, when, where) before the full source. This orients you instantly. Flag difficult questions in Bluebook and return — never lose 3 minutes on one question when 10 others are waiting. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank.
✍️ SAQ Tips (20% of your score)
Each SAQ has three parts (A, B, C) worth 1 point each. Answer each part directly and specifically — one strong sentence with specific historical evidence earns the point. Practice writing SAQs in 12–13 minutes each. Moving from 6/9 to 8/9 adds about 6.7 composite points, which can shift your final score by a full level.
📄 DBQ Tips (25% of your score — highest leverage)
The DBQ is worth more than any other section. Spend 15 minutes reading and annotating the 7 documents before writing. Your thesis must make a specific, defensible argument — not just restate the prompt. Earn contextualization by connecting to a broader historical development from a different time period. Use at least 6 of the 7 documents for evidence, and source at least 3 for full credit.
🖊️ LEQ Tips (15% of your score)
Choose the LEQ prompt for the time period you know best. Write your thesis in the first paragraph — a clear claim with a line of reasoning. Use at least two specific examples of historical evidence. The complexity point (hardest to earn) is available for demonstrating how your argument applies across multiple time periods or connects to other historical processes.
